My storyMy name is Anne Homan and my husband and I have three wonderful children who have taught us so much in life. Being a former teacher, I have always loved working with children, but never did I imagine that I would love learning about birth. During each of my pregnancies, I enjoyed getting to learn as much as I could about birth through Bradley and Hypnobabies classes. Through the influence of midwives, childbirth educators, and doulas in my life, I was encouraged to know my birth options and decide what was important to my husband and I in the birth of our children. Having this influence in my life made me want to decide to become a doula and provide support for other families.
Through the births of each of my children, I was further encouraged to want to become a doula. With the delivery of my first baby, I experienced one extreme situation. I had a 45 hour labor and many unforeseen circumstances, which caused us to deviate from our planned birth center delivery to being transferred to a local hospital. We had complications, and due to our circumstances we did not get to have many things we originally wanted in our birth plan. I had the support of my husband, family, and doula, though, and truly learned that you have to be willing to be flexible in birth, because sometimes things do not always go as planned.
After this extreme came my daughter. My labor with her was only a handful of hours, and it all happened so fast that we unexpectedly had her at home, with my husband as the baby catcher. Everything in her birth happened so calmly that I did not even realize I was in labor until I was in transition stage (thank you Hypnobabies). We immediately had the midwife on the phone and changed our birth center delivery to home. I NEVER in a million years thought this experience would be mine, but again, it taught me that no two births are the same and you have to be ready and willing to approach each birth as it's own unique story. My third birth was quite redemptive from my first two! I planned a home birth, so I didn't have to worry about going anywhere and my support just came to ME! Everything happened flawlessly and I was completely aware of my body more than I had ever been before (thanks to my previous experiences!) I gave birth to my "surprise sex" baby in the water in my very own living room, right in front of our Christmas tree! I was surrounded with the love and support of my parents, husband, and two children, and was thankful to have my midwives and doula with me through my experience as well (and even a birth photographer)! All of my personal birth experiences have really prepared my mind for birth work, and makes me a more well rounded, understanding, and supportive doula!
